It is our great pleasure to announce that on November 2nd, 2022, Stena Oil has signed a newbuilding contract with Genka Shipping for construction of a 2000 DWT Products and Chemical tanker. The vessel is presently being built at Pendik Naval Shipyard in Tuzla, Turkey. Delivery is expected at the end of 2023.
Stena Oil, in close collaboration with sister company Stena Teknik and shipping partner OljOla Shipping, has developed a sea going bunker tanker designed to meet future marine fuel requirements for reducing carbon emissions in the shipping industry.
The new vessel will support Stena Oil’s transition into offering lower carbon liquid fuels and expands its current fleet with an IMO type II Chemical tanker capable of bunkering methanol and biofuels in complete segregations to our customers in the North European region.
The vessel has been designed and specifications are set with the very special operational requirements for trading in the harsh North European waters in mind and will further strengthen Stena Oil’s position as an operator focused on safety, environmental performance and operational excellence.
Equipped with twin propellers and rudders as well as a powerful bow thruster, the vessel has two main engines for redundancy as well as three diesel generators, all equip-ped with SCR’s for Tier III environmental compliance.
In 2015 Stena Line made history by converting one of the largest RoPax ferries in the world, the 240-meter Stena Germanica, to become the world’s first methanol powered RoPax ferry. In July 2022, Proman Stena Bulk, a joint venture between leading global methanol producer Proman and tanker shipping company Stena Bulk, announced that its second methanol-powered newbuild tanker, Stena Pro Marine, has been delivered.
The growing momentum behind methanol-powered vessels across the shipping industry highlights methanol’s key advantage as a cleaner marine fuel. The newbuild vessel will provide versatility as she will be able to carry both oil, methanol and bioderived fuels in coated cargo tanks over five complete segregations, thus allowing Stena Oil to expand its product portfolio with safe carriage of alternative fuel types for its customers.
Stena Oil is the leader in supplying low sulphur marine fuels in Scandinavia and the newbuild will further support its growth in the Skaw-Gothenburg bunker market. For further details please contact our Commercial Team as per below.
